O is for: Our Fullest Potential
This post is part of a series I’m so excited about: “The ABC’s of What I’ve Learned as a Medium and Intuitive Healer.” This is my full-time career, and I am thrilled for the opportunity to share what I’ve learned!
*I say Spirit to mean God, the Universe, the Cosmos - I use these phrases interchangeably for all enlightened beings who help us. I use “greater Spirit” or “Spirit” to mean everything out there, taking care of and managing in here: Them as a group and concept. You may choose to substitute the word “Spirit” with Jesus, Archangel Michael, Allah, Lakshmi, Kuan Yin, The Universe, The Cosmos, or about a billion other names, and it doesn’t matter. Spirit is all this and so much more than we can ever understand. They don’t care what you call them so long as you give them the same respect they give you. I work with these beings closely, as they are an integral part of my practice and career. It is a relationship I heavily encourage everyone to build, as it enhances every aspect of our physical lives and spiritual practice.*
Our Fullest Potential
So many clients want to know: how can I know I’m on the right path? How can I know I’m doing the right things? Where I’m supposed to be? How can I know I am reaching my fullest potential? This really plagues us! Even those who don’t really believe in a life purpose tend to believe in a sense of purpose, and really need one. Even with the least spiritual, to feel our best, we need a sense of purpose, and to feel as if we are headed toward fulfilling our full potential.
According to Spirit, from their point of view, our fullest potential can be broken down into seven categories. If we are making attempts at these seven things, Spirit would say we are living a purpose-led life and meeting our potential!
Working Toward Our Life Purpose and/or A Sense of Purpose
Each time our soul decides to reincarnate, whether we are incarnating as a horse or an elemental being or a human or anything else, we are given a life purpose. This purpose is chosen by our soul along with our non-physical spirit guides, and it is also a combined effort with our entangled souls. Every soul deciding to incarnate with us as our parents, friends, romantic interests, etc., will work together to ensure everyone’s respective purposes have taken each other‘s into account. Then these entangled souls will make sacred contracts, mostly with the purpose of trying to aid each of these souls in getting to their respective purposes!
It often takes us many lifetimes to fulfill one life purpose. This is no one's fault, it's because we forget our purpose each time we're born, and we have to hope to make our way back toward it. This has to count on so many factors! Every purpose comes down to one of ten broad categories the way I read for them: experience, teaching, learning, soul growth, serving humanity, sharing your message, healing yourself, healing others, mastery, or to create or contribute something new. Certain souls really enjoy some of these over others, and we tend to take on some many more times than others. (I am thinking about doing a more thorough post on life purpose specifically, and on what each of these categories looks like - please let me know if there’s interest in this!)
Life purposes often come as a surprise to those whom I work with, as we tend to think our purpose must be something physical and “important,” like, “to eradicate cancer.” I'm much more likely to run into purposes like: "to learn to be a faithful partner," "mastery of kind motherhood," or "healing self of past life trauma," than I am anything physical! Physical purposes are the least likely. Each purpose is also incredibly specific to one’s soul and what they specifically need. Everyone ages and grows at different speeds and needs different things to do so.
Even if we don’t know our life purpose, as in, we haven’t been able to see into the Akashic Record to actually look at our life purpose, we do feel it strongly inside us. I tend to find that people are either walking effortlessly toward their life purpose without even knowing so, or almost doing the exact opposite, walking directly away from it. In cases where one is walking in the exact opposite direction of their life purpose, it gives me the idea that this life purpose was chosen because this soul has had habitual behavior and struggled with meeting this purpose likely several times already.
Spirit loves to make people aware of their life purposes because it can be so helpful to know. Whether our purpose is something like mastering patience or contributing a new idea to the world, it can help to know so we know we are on our way and on the right path. It’s also so important to think of this on a multi-lifetime basis. If our purpose this lifetime is to learn about kind parenthood, possibly it’s because in our last lifetime we were so busy that we were not able to spend time with our children, and we will even likely have the same souls as children as we did during the last lifetime when we weren’t able to fulfill their needs. If our purpose is to contribute something, it’s possibly because our soul has always shied away from the light and never been seen. Everything is so incredibly fair. No one can assume someone else's life purpose is "more important" than theirs, because there is truly no such thing. Our life purpose is exactly what our soul needs this lifetime, based on the lifetimes which have come before and which will come after.
One can sit and really try to feel these in their body - one of these wide categories will just feel right. From there, one can narrow in on what their life purpose might be (especially using a psychic or divination practice). And we really can see opportunities to fill our purpose showing up everywhere in our lives. If someone’s purpose is mastery of family dynamics, you can bet they’ve had complicated family dynamics around since they were a child. If someone’s purpose is to learn about nurturing the self, that person will have had opportunities to learn about self-nurturing since they were a child.
While for Spirit, ideally we will each be moving toward our life purpose effortlessly, if they can't have that, then what they'll hope for next is at least that we have a sense of purpose. One who feels purposeless has more or less every area of life affected by that. One who has a sense of purpose has every area of life affected as well, but for the better. If we don’t have a sense of what we want, we can have a sense of where we’re going or why. Humans need goals to feel good. A sense of purpose helps us make goals.
Our purpose is built into every step we take, whether we are moving toward it or away from it. Our spirit guides and higher selves are doing everything they can to move us toward it. This is why a sense of purpose is the most important piece to Spirit in terms of humans living our fullest potential.
Meditation Practice or Time Alone, In the Quiet
Spirit put these in the order they felt was most important, so that meditation and quiet time comes second only to life purpose shows you how important Spirit finds this.
One hard thing about being human is that culture and society, globally, have made it very difficult to sit with oneself in the quiet. Typically, the moment one has time in the quiet by themselves, they pick up their phone and begin to scroll. This does not count as quiet time, nor personal time, nor meditation time. This is an incredibly social and thought-and-feeling-filled behavior. Many of us are less and less comfortable being alone and feel less safe with only our own thoughts as company. This is truly such a detriment to one’s well-being, because no matter what one is going through, the best answers for solving it are within.
In every case, when we spend time in the quiet with nothing but our thoughts, we can connect to our higher self. We can actually *only* connect to our higher self through quiet introspection and contemplation (unless one has a devoted psychic practice and is used to speaking to them - but everyone, one with no gifts whatsoever, can connect to their higher self through the quiet). A meditation practice, whether one makes the connection or not, is really just about spending time with our higher self. The moment one begins to meditate, their higher self begins to connect to them. Not everyone recognizes this, because depending on how one receives information, this will look very different! Everyone on this planet is sensitive to some kind of subtle energy, and possibly not others. One’s higher self may be able to speak to them in words, but they may have to speak to them in pictures, in memories, in emotional or physical feelings. There are many ways for one's higher self to connect, but every single one has to happen in the quiet. If we fill every moment of our time with other people, or even just with noise from our phones, or by ensuring every second has some kind of stimulus, we are ensuring we cannot connect to our higher self.
Spirit says for many people, even the idea of sitting alone in the quiet and meditating for five minutes "makes one feel as though they will surely immediately be on the brink of madness." This sounds dramatic, but I assure you, it is not. The number of clients I have had give me the most intense speeches about why they cannot meditate is too significant to ignore. People cannot stand to be alone with themselves or be alone with their thoughts, and it's why most people can't stand meditating and even feel it could drive them legitimately insane.
None of our thoughts are there to hurt us! Even the most painful thought, when actually paid attention to and followed to its conclusion, has a purpose, and is trying to inform you of something. Ignoring our thoughts and avoiding time in the quiet with ourselves - this actually keeps us in pain for much longer than we need to be because we are avoiding the thoughts that would save us. Even the most painful thought enters our head for a reason, and is trying to take us somewhere and inform us of something very specific. The only way to understand this is time in the quiet, and that is why to fulfill our fullest potential, we have to learn to be okay with being alone with our own thoughts.
Listening to Our Inner Voice
We get into intuitive nudges all the time, whether we are sitting in the quiet or whether we are at work or actively running around. Intuitive nudges come in the form of thoughts, which feel just like our own thoughts a lot of the time. Sadly, even those of us who would generally call ourselves intuitive people are much more likely to ignore an intuitive nudge that we are to take it. (Myself included! We ALL miss myriad guidance!) If we listened to every piece of intuitive guidance we received in a day, our life would constantly be moving forward, we would never be stuck in the same situation and we would never have anything to complain about.
Every single time we complain it is because we are not following our intuitive guidance to move out of a situation which annoys us or stresses us out, etc. Every single problem in our life has a solution, and every single one of those problems could be solved by listening to our inner voice. Every time a situation upsets us, our higher self has something to say about it. Our higher self really is our inner voice; they are our inner guidance system. They have significantly more information than we do and they are trying to guide us out of what upsets us and into everything that could never make us happy. Whenever we feel upset, our higher self immediately gives us an intuitive nudge for how to take care of the problem.
Now a new problem arises: solving the problem is a lot of work and we would really rather complain about it. Most of us are unwilling to admit that we already know exactly how to solve every problem in our lives, and we just don’t want to do it. If we hate our job, we need to get a new job. If our partner makes us miserable, we need to leave our partner. If we’re avoiding a tough conversation, we need to have a tough conversation. Solving the problem takes work, complaining about the problem is comfortable and easy. This infuriates people even to read, but it is simply the truth, and until one accepts this truth, we really can’t fix any problem in our life. Every problem in our life is up to us to solve, so our higher self is constantly trying to solve every problem in our life. That is why listening to our inner voice is the third most important way to meet our highest potential.
It’s also so important to know that our higher self wants the same things we do! They want us to feel good, they want us to have a sense of purpose, they want us to enjoy our lives and the people we have around. They absolutely never give us advice that is intended to hurt us or make our lives worse. If our life is difficult, we are not likely to be moving toward the purpose which is more important to them even than it is to us. When we work with our higher self as a conscious co-creator of this life, suddenly our desires expand because what we are capable of wanting grows. Our higher self wants to work with us to make a beautiful life, so following one's inner voice is actually the most logical thing one could do.
Unity with Others (In Practice or Theory)
People need community. Most of us really need a community each in theory and in practice. Many of the problems happening in our society are coming from the idea that rugged individualism is the way to move forward, rather than unity. Humans all ascend or none of us do. If bombs or climate change or poison water or anything else takes out humans as a whole, then not one human gets to consider themselves a winner. Not one of us wins unless all of us do. No one moves forward unless all of us do. So we have to stop taking the idea that we are the only person in the world who matters.
A very deep internalized selfishness is beginning to run through humans. More and more behave in a way they know they wouldn’t want others to behave in, and it is simply unsustainable. When people habitually lie, they do so assuming that most others in society are still habitually telling the truth. When one habitually cheats on their partner, they are typically still expecting their partner to be faithful. One who is violent still expects most others in society to behave with safety. One who breaks laws expects everyone else to follow them. You get it, there are too many examples. This is a really big problem. We can’t expect for the problem to clear up globally and for wars and huge traumas to stop when we can’t even be kind to our partners and children and friends one-on-one.
This is why unity is part of meeting our full potential! We have to feel unified with our friends, partners, coworkers, children, and really with humanity as a concept to be able to move the paradigm forward.
One who does not have a community in actuality can still think of themselves as part of society and as part of a larger picture, and this counts to Spirit as unity with others. One can essentially be a hermit and not want to go out into society and take part in activities out there, but still care very deeply about the future of humanity, civilization, and doing well as a member of the species. This is what Spirit means by unity in theory, rather than in practice.
A Willingness to Accept New Paradigms, Learn More, Grow More, Believe More
Many of us assume that if we admit we have anything to learn, that we are calling ourselves stupid. Even the brightest in our world, no matter how much one has learned, has something left to learn. Any one of us could study any topic on the planet for our entire lifetime and there would still be more to study. There is not anyone who is "done" as a person or a soul, or we wouldn’t be incarnated here! (And all enlightened beings will tell you they are not “done” either, but that guiding us is now part of their learning and growing process.)
One has to be willing to grow and learn new things to meet their full potential. If we think we know everything at 25, 35, 45… We have more than half our life to go in a lot of cases and we aren’t picking up any new knowledge or allowing ourselves room for change. This says a lot about why society is still struggling with things like basic gender equality, racial equality, equality among our LGBTQ family, etc. Times are supposed to change, people are supposed to grow, paradigms are supposed to shift, and this can only be done through a global and societal willingness to grow, learn, and change, as one must personally grow, learn, and change. Keeping everything the same as it has always been for the sake of tradition is doing an immense disservice to everyone involved. We have to be willing to evolve with each other and with the planet we are standing on, or humanity will be left behind.
Spirit feels part of the problem is that unfortunately, so much of our interaction with each other has become about argument and insult that most of the time, most people are on constant defense. Admitting we have more to learn or room to grow is handing a weapon to the enemy and giving them more over which to criticize us. This is part of why the online culture has become so toxic. Rather than uplifting or empowering one another, we tear each other down so that we can feel better about ourselves personally. Rather than learn and grow more ourselves, we’d often rather find someone else we think knows less and attack them.
Spirit also understands that the very idea of growth or seeking out new knowledge can be scary for many, because it’s simply frightening to encounter something we can’t identify. Rather than shrink away from that discomfort, they encourage us to look at every chance to grow as an exciting opportunity for our current life and all future lifetimes.
Healthy Boundaries
Speaking on each an energetic and physical level, having boundaries is one of the most important things and one which is very easily and often left by the wayside.
Energetically speaking, Spirit views our boundaries as the layers of our personal aura. Each layer of one’s auric field is a barrier between themselves and the world. It is a boundary through which we receive and perceive all information coming toward us. When we disrespect others, even on small scales, it does damage to both fields involved. If we speak over somebody, it causes damage to the auric field, so imagine what it does if we scream at or hit someone? All violence to others should be seen as self-violence because all violence does damage to our personal auric layers - our personal energetic boundaries.
Even if we are someone who constantly lets someone else cross our boundaries, we still must be responsible for what we allow. Whether we are a constant aggressor or a constant victim, there are problems with our boundaries.
To meet our fullest potential, we really want our energetic boundaries to be healthy, because that is what aids us in having healthy relational boundaries in day-to-day life. When our aura already has holes, cuts, slashes, and dings all over it from constant injury, we are that much more likely to go with the practiced behavior and keep allowing more injury. When those layers are healthy, we are perceiving the world differently - we are perceiving it through the eyes of one who is healthy, and everything we run into must reflect that.
When we are a person who believes in healthy boundaries, and when our energetic systems reflect that, our relationships simply will have healthy boundaries. This is why a relationship should be ideally between two healthy, whole individuals who want to complement and uplift one another, but not complete or fill in the holes of one another. This is simply a very unhealthy attitude. No one else can ever complete us and we can’t ever process anyone else’s energy or their lessons. To be whole and healthy, we must complete ourselves, and much of that starts with these barriers and boundaries.
Malleability
Last we have malleability, and malleability is so important especially because it plays into every single other thing above! If we are particularly rigid, we can’t follow our intuition, we can’t have healthy boundaries, we can’t feel unity or allow ourselves to effortlessly move to our sense of purpose, etc.
Being malleable is one of the most attractive qualities in a person to Spirit, because a person who is malleable can start out any place and still end up somewhere better. A person who is too rigid is likely to end exactly where they started, whether within a particular situation or in life in general. We must be malleable to allow for new paradigms and any changes to our life whatsoever!
The importance of malleability to manifesting can’t be overstated. Changes to our external circumstances almost never come from our external circumstances. Changes on the outside come from changes on the inside and a change to what we are manifesting, based on a change in our personal vibration. One who is too rigid will not be able to manifest new experiences because they will not be able to change their thinking enough, so they will not be able to change their feelings or vibrations enough to manifest something new into their lives.
