S is for: Soul Archetypes

This post is part of a series I’m so excited about: “The ABC’s of What I’ve Learned as a Medium and Intuitive Healer.” This is my full-time career, and I am thrilled for the opportunity to share what I’ve learned!

*I say Spirit to mean God, the Universe, the Cosmos - I use these phrases interchangeably for all enlightened beings who help us. I use “greater Spirit” or “Spirit” to mean everything out there, taking care of and managing in here: Them as a group and concept. You may choose to substitute the word “Spirit” with Jesus, Archangel Michael, Allah, Lakshmi, Kuan Yin, The Universe, The Cosmos, or about a billion other names, and it doesn’t matter. Spirit is all this and so much more than we can ever understand. They don’t care what you call them so long as you give them the same respect they give you. I work with these beings closely, as they are an integral part of my practice and career. It is a relationship I heavily encourage everyone to build, as it enhances every aspect of our physical lives and spiritual practice.*

Our Soul Archetypes

Soul archetypes have grown to mean so much to me, it almost feels impossible to know where to begin! I have come to view everything in life through this lens, and I wouldn't know how to stop, now.

Our soul archetype is how our soul was created - it is who we are, whether actively incarnated or in between lifetimes.

Soul archetypes are my personal discovery, and they came to me through spirit guide readings! When I first began to do spirit guide readings, spirit guides would each give me one of fifteen archetypes for themselves, to give the person receiving the reading the best lens through which to view the guide. I thought they were describing their personality, but it is so much more than that. Over time, Spirit explained it isn't just our guides, but every being with a soul was created into these archetypes.

For the past couple years, I have worked to share the soul archetypes with my clients, because having an understanding of ours can change everything about the way we operate! Someone who is an archetypal Ruler will simply not have the same in-balance or out-of-balance traits as someone who is an archetypal Lover. Understanding who we are on this level helps us understand how to put our best foot forward.

Distinguishing Between Soul Archetypes and Personality

It’s easy to want to tie these archetypes to our personality, so it’s great to begin with distinguishing between the two.

Our personality is made up of many things, but mostly a combination of experiences from this lifetime. When we're children, our parents reward our behaviors which they like and frown upon the behaviors which they don't, as do our siblings, teachers, school friends, etc., and our personality is typically made of the result of these experiences, along with our past-life trauma and experiences, and our soul archetype kind of sits underneath all that.

Our soul’s archetype is deeper than our personality, and deeper than our astrological sign, which changes from lifetime to lifetime. It is how we were created: who we are and what we are capable of rests within these archetypes. This is on a soul level - in every moment which our soul exists, we will be the same, archetypally, no matter which body we take on.

When I meet someone who shares my archetype, it's immediately apparent. But we don't often or regularly share many personality traits! While someone who shares my soul archetype is likely to have certain personality quirks like mine, their personality is a combination of their archetype, their experiences, and their trauma from this lifetime and others, as is mine. We're each unique individuals, we just share these common traits underneath.

Why It Matters

On a soul level, during every lifetime, we will have specific in-balance and out-of-balance traits based on these archetypes, regardless of our experiences. A Patience soul is very different when their energy is off than a Trickster soul when their energy is off. We each go out-of-balance in very specific ways, and this is tied to our soul's archetype. This cannot be changed or adapted, but we can be! When we know the in- and out-of-balance traits which are likely to present themselves in us, we can choose to live in a way which creates the most equilibrium for us personally. We can learn to recognize our most positive soul attributes and nurture and empower them. We can recognize our out-of-balance traits, so we can see when we’re slipping out, and correct our energy a little sooner.

You’ll notice the in and out-of-balance habits look a lot like opposites, and many wonder how this could be. The answer is that it really must be this way! Just like hot and cold are not really opposites, but two different ends of the spectrum of temperature (so one could not exist without the other), we must hold opposite ends of an energetic spectrum within ourselves. Someone who is incredibly kind and moderate in-balance is likely to be difficult and create disharmony when out-of-balance. Someone who is nurturing in-balance will be aloof and cold when out-of-balance. We simply must hold both ends of an energetic spectrum. This is a huge gift, because we can recognize the habits we don't like and know when we are falling away from living as our highest self.

We are each the universe experiencing itself many ways over. We each have a spark of the Creator, the Universe, inside us, and in that way as well as others, we are truly made of star stuff. These archetypes link us to who we’ve always been in a different way than anything can, and discovering them has been one of the most rewarding joys of my career!

The Archetypes and Their In- and Out-Of-Balance Characteristics

I find that some archetypes are very unlikely to make their way to psychic readings or energy work, which I find so fascinating! I don't want to imply any hierarchy whatsoever, so I am going to order these archetypes in the order which I work with them most often.

I named them, and I am incredibly open to discussion from those who feel theirs has been named inadequately. I have been offering this information to my clients for years now, and I have loved having these discussions with them! Several of my more passionate clients helped me name a few of these, and I am so grateful. With each, I also asked Spirit if they felt the name captured the essence of the archetype, as even deities fit into these archetypes and they’re very important to them!

Also, if the archetype belongs to you, you will recognize *every* single one of the in- and out-of-balance traits as your own, even if on very small scales or degrees. One who has lived mostly in-balance can still see the ways the out-of-balance traits have affected them, even if minimally, and vice versa. These in- and out-of-balance qualities aren't maybes, they're for suresies. When we connect to our archetype, we recognize every single trait on the list.

  • Trusts in their own potential and has faith that they will get where they are trying to go

Out of Balance Qualities

  • Emotional exhaustion and imbalance

  • Can behave as if one has mental health problems, such as Bipolar or BPD, though they do not have an illness, their energetic imbalance tends to just mimic these symptoms

  • Negative intentions which can lead to being manipulative or selfish, or in extreme cases, corruption

  • Unfocused energy which is impossible to coax toward a target

  • Blocked creative energy

  • Thinks their way is the only good way (they are usually like this in-balance as well, and it is not always the worst trait, as The Alchemist is often right that their way is the best way to do something. It can just become alienating so one has to watch out)

  • Moves forward blindly with no idea where they’re going

  • Cannot hear others’ ideas or understand their viewpoint, and will charge on as if their way is the only way (often, not even out of tyranny - the Ruler genuinely forgets that there are ways to do things other than theirs)

To Make it Even More Complicated

We don’t just have one archetype, at least not the vast majority of the time. Each of us has three, and I’ve grown accustomed to putting them in these little pie charts so we can see how they affect us.

My soul archetype chart looks like this:

soul archetype pie chart

Each of these affects me like we would think they would, and on a scale as this implies. When I am in-balance or out-of-balance, I am by far most likely to be so as a Nurturer. When I go out-of-balance, I shut down, I feel as though nothing will ever be okay emotionally again, and I neglect myself and everyone I know. Luckily, I have a job which makes it so I work on my energetic systems more than most, and I tend to stay fairly in-balance (not always the case, but thank God is now). This means I can look at the good qualities of the Nurturer, the Alchemist, or the Lover, and try to empower them in myself. I know these things can’t be changed. I know I have in-balance qualities and out-of-balance qualities per these archetypes which I cannot ever get rid of. But that means if I start to feel myself becoming selfish about a situation, I can go, "Oh, my Alchemist is reacting right now, and I know this isn’t how I really feel." Each of my archetypes has the tendency to make an incredibly painful and disharmonious atmosphere when they are upset, so I know that for me personally, this is the first and most likely way I’m going to go out-of-balance. When I see that I am creating a tense atmosphere and other people are walking on eggshells, I know I’m out-of-balance, and I can right the ship faster.

In a lot of cases, our secondary and tertiary archetypes really help by balancing out our first. Every single combination is possible, which means there are souls whose entire pie chart is made up of Trickster qualities, or Ruler qualities, or any of the others. In thousands of readings and healing sessions, I've worked with four of these people, who had all one archetype. I've worked with many, many more who have one archetype doubled up in their chart. This ends up being less fortunate for the person, because the fewer out-of-balance qualities we have, the more extreme they seem to be.

For an example on this, my dad’s archetype pie chart looks like this: (he’s given me permission to use him as an example tons, mostly because he does not at all believe in what I do, lol)

Neither the Ruler nor the Alchemist goes out-of-balance by becoming depressed or emotionally exhausted or overwhelmed. This means quite literally, unless he were under some extreme psychic attack and carrying energy which didn't belong to him, (which I cannot imagine), my dad is actually incapable of becoming depressed. He simply does not have that out-of-balance quality available to him. It is not something he understands. When he goes out-of-balance, he becomes controlling. He becomes selfish and absolutely certain that he knows the right way, and so this is how me and my sister grew up! Even though now, we see him as an amazing dad who gave us boundaries and structure, and who was mostly in-balance, the times we used to remember from our childhood were mostly when he was out-of-balance, and it felt like a tyrant had taken over our home. But this is just how the Ruler behaves when out-of-balance. Because his first and secondary archetypes are the same, his negative Ruler qualities seemed even more extreme. This is what tends to happen when a person has fewer ways to go out-of-balance, those qualities are more prevalent to us (and the person enacting them).

I see a lot of cases where someone’s main archetype and their secondary archetypes really battle it out, and this leads to the most problems. For instance, I have many clients where their main archetype is one which is incredibly isolated, who needs time alone, who wants achievement and victory, etc. But what if one of those has a secondary archetype which won’t be able to feel complete unless they have a family? Who really needs love, closeness, and community? I have some clients whose main archetype is incredibly feminine and their secondary and tertiary more masculine. Some for whom their primary archetype and secondary archetypes are almost complete opposites, so one can have one archetype out-of-balance while the others are doing great.

Sometimes our archetypes are like oil and water inside us, feeling like they will never blend enough to make us feel good. But, we are the universe experiencing itself. Each of these blends of archetypes is a beautiful thing because it’s another way to know ourselves inside and out, know when we are in line with our highest self and being the best us we can put out, and know when we need some work to be who we want to be.

How to Use This

We can all recognize these qualities within ourselves. As a nurturer soul, when my energy goes out of balance, I become depressed, find it impossible to practice self-care or care of others, etc. Because I recognize this in myself, when I feel it beginning to happen, I can address the issues much sooner and get back to my nurturing, loving self. I don’t nail it every time - sometimes I find I am already deeply in a depression before I realize what has happened. But I nail it on as many days as possible, and this leads to being more in-balance in a more general sense. Many of my clients have expressed the same - knowing their soul archetypes helps them see that knowing how we behave when we are out-of-balance helps us naturally move back toward balance.

It also helps to know the in- and out-of-balance characteristics of your loved ones to practice compassion. My son is a Monk soul, which is incredibly different from any of my archetypes. He is 18 now, and I discovered the soul archetypes when he was 15. His entire life, I was amazed because I am fairly type A and have always had things under control, but he often acted as if I had not made plans with nearly enough care or time (I mean, he already acted like this when he was like 5-years-old). This always amazed me because he was never late, he had everything he needed - I could not understand why he felt as though I did not put enough effort into certain plans. Once I understood the difference in us archetypally, I could understand that this was because for his soul, he needs to plan things significantly further in advance than I do to feel comfortable. If I had understood this when he was younger, I could have been more accommodating and more understanding to why he felt like I was not making plans far enough in advance, and we could have argued about this less.

My mom is an Alchemist soul through and through, and it’s pretty much impossible to describe just how regularly this comes up between us. So much of the time, my mom assumes everyone thinks exactly like she does, and she’s very quick to assume what other people‘s motivations are for their behavior (based on what hers would be if she were doing what they are doing). I have to remind her that she’s being an Alchemist, and that everyone is starting from a different place and not everyone has the same motives as her. This is still very difficult for her to believe, but the soul archetypes have helped her come around and really see herself as an Alchemist as well. Now, when she's quick to say someone else is behaving in a certain way for a specific reason and she's sure of it, she takes a step back and goes, "Or maybe I'm being an Alchemist about this."

My dad is a double Ruler soul, as mentioned. Growing up, my sister and I felt so stifled, like we had absolutely no freedom, and like our world had an absurd number of boundaries and too much structure. Now I can see how for a Ruler soul, that was him being the best dad he could be. I am unbelievably grateful for his rules and structure now, and for the boundaries he taught me to have. Giving structure and boundaries to his children was, to him (and every Ruler soul), imperative. It’s really helped me understand all the ways we felt stifled as kids, and just appreciate him for the beautiful life he gave us.

This really extends to every area of my life now! Even when I see someone screaming at someone else in public, I can’t help but think about their soul archetype, and how many of the archetypes simply never get to that place. When I read or watch fiction, I can't help but think a character isn't a good, well-realized character unless they fit into one of these archetypes (because every human being does). When I watch reality TV, and especially competition shows, I can't help but note how *most* of the people who find their way to reality TV are Ruler or Stallion souls.

Where one archetype may feel like their world could simply never be complete unless they were able to have a family, and where one archetype will likely always define themselves by their partner, others can’t stand the idea of having a family, and yet others feel a desperate need for liberation in many partnerships. It’s just good to know. None is better than the other, each have their positives and their negatives. An archetype which may have extreme difficulty being human may have a much easier time on one of the other planets where we can incarnate, with different societal expectations. Understanding who we are and how we are likely to behave based on it is just one more way too show up to as many days as possible as our highest self.

Thanks for reading! If you want to confirm or know your soul archetypes, send me an email or a message on Etsy! I'll happily channel yours for you for free. :) I also have significantly more information channeled about each of these archetypes, such as how they can find closure, more about how they are as parents and partners, how they can connect to Spirit, some characters from books and movies who fit the archetype, and much more! If you'd like the info for yours, once again just message and I'll gladly send it over! The archetypes are so important to me and I love them so much - I'm happy to connect as many people as I can to them. <3
